How Lightsabers Work
Here's another one from one of the coolest sites on the Internet: How Lightsabers Work.

Insanely cute photo of a baby porcupine.
Here it is, your cute photo of the day.

Photo Gallery - Sandstorm
Ok, I always figured that wall of sand in The Mummy was artistic license. I guess not.

What your pets do when you're not home
If you've ever wondered about that, wonder no more.

Everyone's getting just a little too jumpy.
I think everyone just needs to calm down. Calling out the bomb squad and snipers over a burrito is just silly.

Journal Entry
Ok, if I may briefly use this web site as an actual blog, I've got a few things I wanted to pass along.

First of all,
Q. What is Dubbya's stand on Roe vs. Wade?
A. He really doesn't care how people get out of New Orleans.

Next up, geekiest conversation EVER. If you don't understand the following, then pat yourself on the back for having a life. A group of us were in the cafeteria today at work when Chuck, the boss man, walks in. We all kind of scatter, and he stops to talk to Damon. While the rest of us are streaming out the door, the following conversation unfolds:
Ron: Avoiding Chuck aggro!
Ben: It's ok, Damon's tanking.
Ryan: But he doesn't have a priest. He's going to die.
Ben: Just shield him and run.

Last, I caved. Ron came in this morning with one of these. Now, my 512MB mp3 player just went on the fritz a week and a half ago. Within hours of seeing Ron's, I'd ordered one. And it's been processing for almost 7 hours now! Why the Hell hasn't it shipped yet!?!

Mr. Doubletalk
Ok, this guy needs to run for office. He's a master at talking and talking and talking, the whole time saying nothing at all. Check out the videos. I've only watched part of the prank on Kelly Rippa, and it had me rolling.

Movie Copiers are Worse Criminals Than Killers
At least according to the government. The Family Entertainment and Copyright Act, passed by the House in April and signed into Law later that week, makes camcording a movie a federal offense, punishable by 3 to 6 years in prison. Compare that with involuntary manslaughter, which carries a penalty of 0 to 3 years, and we can rest assured that our nation's priorities are in order. According to this article at The Register, It also indemnifies theater operators against all criminal and civil liabilities arising from detaining suspects "in a reasonable manner." How'd you like to get paid for making up bone headed laws like that? I guess that's what you do if you can't hold down a real job.

More Hurricane Katrina Bullshit
First up, a first hand account of the ongoing new Orleans rescues. Boing Boing also has a collection of links talking about the mercenaries that some corporations have hired. These mercenaries are, of course, not subject to the private weapons ban. Then there's the dangerously incompetent lack of communication that seems to be a big part of the problem down there. MSNBC has a commentary that sums things up pretty well. And last week's This American Life has some pretty stirring interview. It also points out something that's gotten lost among all the finger pointing that the "we're not playing the blame game" people are doing. It points out that FEMA was put in charge of the whole operation the day before the storm. Bet you haven't heard that little tidbit on Fox News. What I'm still trying to figure out is how, during a mandatory evacuation, people were forbidden, at gunpoint, from leaving the city. That bumper sticker's right. If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention.

15 Years Of Hubble
The J-Walk Blog pointed me towards this Wired article about Hubble's 15th birthday last April. Also in the post is a link to a gallery of breathtaking Hubble photos.

Found this on Boing Boing. It's a collection of free star charts, all under a Creative Commons License.

Simulation Training for Doctors
Unfortunately, the human mind is set up to best learn from mistakes. This is a problem for people who work in emergency rooms and operating rooms. A nice way around this problem is giving them simulator training.

She weighed in at 6 pounds, 8 ounces, and is 20 inches long. And, I might add, she's a real cutie.

PlanetDave How-To: Fizzy Bath Bombs
I'm not normally this "Bed Bath and Beyond". But this kind of intrigues me, I think partially because of the kitchen chemistry aspect of it, as well as the presence of the word "bomb" in the title. Boing Boing pointed me towards a recipe for making your own fizzing bath bombs. They look like giant scented Alka-Seltzers that you drop into your bathtub. Hmmm. I guess there's no reason this wouldn't work in a pool if you make a big enough batch. I'll keep you posted.

New Orleans Blog
The web provider DirectNIC is based in New Orleans. Amazingly, they haven't had an outage in this whole mess. One of their employees is keeping a blog, and it's quite a read.
